Solar Water Pumping System

Typically used in remote areas, rural villages, farms or anywhere that lacks a reliable electricity supply, such systems provide clean, renewable energy to power pumps that extract groundwater or surface water for domestic, irrigated agricultural or livestock use.

Solar water pumping system is composed of Solar panels(PV),solar controller (or invert) and water pump etc.

Main components and Working Principle

Ø Solar panels: responsible for converting sunlight into electrical energy for the pump. The number and size of the panels depends on the amount of water to be pumped and the sunlight conditions.

Ø Solar controller: regulates the power generated by the panels and ensures that the pump receives a stable voltage and current. In some systems, the controller may also include a battery charging function to store power at night or on cloudy days.

Ø Water Pump: Usually a DC electric pump, powered directly by the solar panel. Water pumps pump water from sources such as groundwater wells, rivers, lakes, etc. to a reservoir or for direct distribution to water points

Ø Cisterns or water towers: are used to store pumped water to ensure a steady supply of water during periods of no sunlight. The capacity of the cistern should be designed according to the water demand and the maximum number of consecutive cloudy days.

Ø Pipeline system: connects the pumps, cisterns and the final water point to transport the water to its destination.

Ø Water purification unit (optional): used to filter or sterilise the extracted water to ensure safe water quality.
